fanmade sprunki definitive phase 9 alive
Phase 9 "Alive" - What Does That Even Mean?
Alright so someone in the community decided Phase 9 needed to be "alive." Not just regular Phase 9. Not "definitive" Phase 9 (though it has that in the name too, because of course it does). Not even "enhanced" or "remastered." Alive.
I asked my Discord group what they thought "alive" meant in this context. Answers ranged from "maybe the characters move more?" to "probably just a cool name someone thought of at 3 AM" to "could be a reference to that other mod where characters have more... personality?"
After playing for... I don't know, half an hour while pretending to work? Here's my completely unscientific assessment:
The sounds feel more... responsive? Like there's more variation based on what order you place them? Or maybe I'm imagining it because the name suggested I should. Placebo effect is real, folks.
The Weirdest Success I've Had
So I was trying to make something that sounded like rain. Because it was actually raining outside (for once, this isn't a metaphor) and I thought it would be meta or something.
Failed spectacularly. Sprunki sounds are too... bouncy? Digital? Percussive? To sound like actual rain.
BUT - I accidentally made something that sounded like a 8-bit video game version of a thunderstorm. Which is arguably cooler. The trick was using three specific characters in a very specific order:
- That purple thing that looks like a sad turnip (makes a low "wub wub" sound)
- The orange character with what might be antennae (creates a sharp "click" rhythm)
- The teal... blob? creature? (adds a high-pitched "ping" every few beats)
Put them in that exact order. Don't ask me why it works. It just does. It sounds like a Game Boy trying to warn you about incoming weather.
Comparison Time (Because Everyone Asks)
How does this "Alive" version stack up against other popular Sprunki searches people keep making?
Vs. sprunki pyramixed 0.9: That one feels more... structured? Polished? Official-ish? This feels more experimental. Like someone's personal playground.
Vs. sprunki retake: Retake has that whole... I don't know, "vibe shift"? Different aesthetic. This stays closer to the original Phase 9 feel but with... tweaks.
Vs. regular sprunki phase 9: Honestly, if you put them side by side, I might not be able to tell you which is which in a blind test. But that's probably just me.
The "Make Me Smile" Challenge
There's this one character - I think it's supposed to be a hat? Or a mushroom wearing a smaller hat? - that makes this ridiculous "boioioing" sound when you combine it with the character that looks like a slice of pizza (don't ask, I didn't design these).
It's so stupid. And it made me actually laugh out loud. Which, considering I was supposed to be writing an email about quarterly reports, was a welcome distraction.
That's the thing about these fanmade versions - they have these little moments of pure, unadulterated silliness that the more "serious" mods sometimes polish away.
Questions That Pop Into My Head At 11 PM
Why "definitive" if it's fanmade?
Great question. I have no answer. Maybe "definitive" in this context means "this is my definitive take on what Phase 9 should be"? Or maybe it's just a cool word people like using. See also: "ultimate," "deluxe," "enhanced," "reimagined." We're running out of adjectives.
Can you actually make good music with this?
Define "good." If you mean "something you'd willingly listen to for pleasure," maybe? If you mean "something that doesn't sound like a robot having a breakdown," that's harder. But hey, art is subjective.
Is it worth downloading?
It's a browser game. You don't download it. You just... go to the page. That's the beauty of it. No commitment. No installation. No wondering "do I have space for this?" It's the digital equivalent of a pop-up book.
Personal Bias Time
I hate the green character that looks like a rocket. Its sound is too... shrill? Piercing? It feels like it doesn't play well with others. Every time I try to incorporate it into a mix, it just dominates everything and not in a good way.
But my friend swears it's the "secret sauce" that makes his best combos work. So maybe I just don't know how to use it. Or maybe my ears are broken. Or maybe he has terrible taste. All possibilities are on the table.
Closing Thoughts (If You Can Call Them Thoughts)
Phase 9 Alive is... fine. It's perfectly cromulent. It won't change your life. It probably won't even change your afternoon. But it might kill 15 minutes in an entertaining way while you avoid doing something actually important.
And sometimes, that's exactly what you need.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go try to make something that sounds vaguely like a dial-up modem connecting. Because nostalgia, or something.
Update: It sounds nothing like a dial-up modem. It sounds like a fax machine drowning. Close enough.
